Here’s how to get up to speed on the Georgia voting bills sparking national controversy.
2020 saw an election like no other, marked by record-breaking rates of mail-in voting, increased early-voter turnout, and disputes over the integrity of the election process. In response, hundreds of voting-related bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country. Georgia has once again stepped into the national political spotlight, with some of its voting bills becoming the central focus of reporting from national news outlets, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and CNN.
Amidst this national controversy, Branch is promoting our newest project: a tech-powered newsletter which focuses squarely on state legislation in Georgia. The newsletter, titled The Session, is a free, daily email designed to help Georgians understand, monitor, and respond to newly-proposed bills, including the over 80 voting-related bills currently being discussed in the Georgia General Assembly.
“These bills are the sort of thing you don’t hear about until the pot is boiling over,” explains Founder Walter Ley. “Our goal is to make it easy for the average person to learn about impactful legislation while it’s early enough for them to still influence whether or not a bill passes.”
Our team of policy and law experts focuses on concise, nonpartisan explanations, so that voters can form their own opinion about each bill.
With only a month left until the 2021 General Assembly concludes, The Session has reported on over 15 voting bills, including bills that would allow for same-day voter registration, end no-excuse mail-in voting, and end automatic voter registration through the DMV. In addition to voting bills, The Session reports on bills related to a wide range of issues, including COVID-19 response, criminal justice, gun safety, drag-racing, and the environment.
